Putnam County Courthouse

Hi! Welcome to my county courthouses page.

This is the home page for my lifelong project to visit (and have my picture taken in front of) every county courthouse in America. The idea for this web page (and project) began a long time ago, in a life that now seems far, far away.

The project itself first began in earnest when I had the above picture taken in front of the Putnam County Courthouse in Greencastle, Indiana, on January 8, 1995. My friend, Jeff Bogda, took the picture for me. I was visiting Jeff at DePauw University along with another good friend of mine, Steve McHugh. I believe Steve also took a picture of me at the same time on his disposable camera, but that picture (as far as I know) has faded into the mists of time--or may still be in Steve's possession at his current home in Council Bluffs, Iowa. One or the other.

Either way, this picture captures the essence of what I had in mind at the time: to have my picture taken in front of every county courthouse in America. Why? Because I felt as if merely going to each one of the 50 states was not enough. I wanted to go to all 3,070 American counties instead. And the only thing each county in America shares in common is a county courthouse, which serves as its seat of government. Hence, the only real way to show that I had been everywhere in the U.S. of A. was to have my picture taken in front of each of these courthouses.

Some 83 courthouses and more than ten years later, I've been able to accumulate all of the pictures that follow. I hope you enjoy them and perhaps feel inspired to take a few courthouse pictures of your own some day. You'll never have any idea how much fun it is until you give it a try...
