Day 2, Part 4: Friday, May 16th, 2008
Glasgow, Montana to Rapid City, South Dakota
On the way back out of the National Monument, I encounter a small prairie dog town by the side of the road.
This one kept chirping at his friends, warning them to stay underground as I walked by the numerous holes of their "town", trying to get a close-up picture.
Off in the distance, some deer were grazing in front of the red hills on the edge of the Monument's boundaries. I decide--as I've done with so many other places before--to come back here some day to hike the trail that meanders through them.
And then I take one last picture of the snow fences before I leave Wyoming for good.
The last objective of the day is the geographical center of the United States, which is located near Belle Fourche, the seat of Butte County in South Dakota.
I'm able to find the county courthouse okay, but there's no sign anywhere that tells me how to get to the center of the United States.
Disappointed, I resign myself to taking a few pictures of the courthouse gleaming in the sunset, and then drift off down the highway towards Rapid City, listening to Bruce Springsteen sing "Born to Run" while the dark of night begins to creep over the Black Hills.
